Gelmersee
Switzerland isn’t just about cheese and banking. In spring and summer, the lakes and Alps become the go-to weekend destinations for locals. It’s hiking season, a time to enjoy fresh air, stunning lakes, crystal-clear water, vibrant wildflowers, and breathtaking landscapes.
I was lucky to have a Saturday off and didn’t want to miss the chance to explore Lake Gelmer (or Gelmersee, as the locals call it). Just about an hour’s drive from Zurich, followed by a short ride on the Gelmer funicular (be sure to book your tickets in advance!), you’ll find yourself at the top, greeted by the lake’s gorgeous turquoise waters and lush green surroundings, a true feast for the eyes.
Though the weather that day was less than ideal, foggy and rainy, the silver lining was the absence of crowds, which made the experience even more serene. The wildflowers lining the paths added a touch of magic, a reminder of the beauty of nature. Sometimes, life feels perfect when we pause to take it all in.
